Kanneliya Forest

Among the countries in the world which have special bio diversity, Sri Lanka has got a Prominent place. To the south west of Sri Lanka and 35 KM away from Galle to the north east the kanneliya rain forest lies. It is a tropical rain forest in Sri Lanka. There are about 5305 hectares covered by the land. From that there are about 5118 hectares covered by the thick forest and 166.8 hectares covered by the shrub forest. Forest plantation covers the 293 hectares of the land it is 60 M - 425M higher from the sea level Nilwala river and Gina ganga cater the kanneliya forest and there are rocks and valleys. Annual rain fall is about 750 mm and the temperature is 27o. This climate affects the rapid growth of the animals and plants .The tourists can access easily to this beautiful gift of the nature with glistening water in the streams and the beautiful flora and fauna from the down south.

There is a giant vine called Yodha Puswela .Kanneliya forest provides a habitat for 59 species of birds, 32 species of butterflys and 14 speciesof reptiles . In addition there are 7 species of snails which are not much considered by anyone. And also find insect species such as caterpillars spiders etc. Caratophora aspera Lyriocephalus calotes , catocrptis wiegmanni, calotes calotes. Like chameleons and lizards can be found here. Ahaetulla nasutus ephalus ,Naja naja ,Trimoresurus trigonou ephalus, python nolurus, molurus like reptiles can be found in this forest. Black monkey Truchpith (cus vetoles) like mammals also can be found here

Out of 1/3 of pisces species are endemic to Sri Lanka, most of these fish live in these streams and lakes freely in the kanneliya forest. The various kinds of mushrooms found in Sri Lanka can be seen in this forest. Further more there are various kinds of pretty flowers, Fruits and greeniers indicate the glamour and grandeour of the Sri Lankan flora and fauna .The carnivores plants such as nepenthes can be found here. The Nugagala aranya which was established in May 1994 indicates the quietness of this land. Villagers and the tourists visit here and engage in various meritorious activities, Such as Preaching dhamma , Sil campaign and Almsgiving. The people who live in the near by villagers gain kithul treacle and cane for their industries to develop the economy. But It’s very pathetic to say these greeneries are being evacuated from the planet by this ungrateful man for his own selfish end s.
